For the famous sculptor Claus Cito, born in the village of Bascharage, a square was designed. A circular square, paved from roughly carved granite stones and slightly rising to the central point, presents the “kneeling woman with a garland of flowers” in a water basin. The water basin protects the petite figure from direct access and increases the grace of the young, bereaved woman through the reflections of the water on her face and figure. The edge of the square is lined with benches and high-stemmed plane trees, which give the square a spatial hold. The water basin is covered with a hem of shell limestone, the material of the sculpture. Yellow sand was added to the hammered concrete of the basin. The tinting not only harmonizes with the sculpture and the shell limestone border, but also stands in dialogue with the nearby church built from exposed concrete. The Monument des Morts integrates an existing linden tree. The steps to the left and right of the tree lead to a small platform where wreaths and flowers can be laid. The platform merges into a vertical element on which the commemorative plaques created by Cito are attached. This object, also made of hammered concrete, acts as a stage for the recurring ritual of remembrance. The grazing light that falls suddenly between the back wall and the memorial plaques, creates the appropriate atmosphere.
