The secondary school building of the international school of Differdange is part of a school campus consisting of three buildings.
As free-standing bodies, they form a spatial constellation at the northern end of the Parc de la Chiers. One of the urban planning goals was to make this central location for the city accessible to everyone.
The building is planned for 800 students. Among other things, it has 32 classrooms, 8 special rooms, a restaurant and a cafeteria, as well as a triple gym.
A ring of classrooms and offices encloses the gymnasium, which is naturally lit and ventilated from above. The building structure is made of solid concrete. The outer walls consist of prefabricated wooden elements. The ceilings are used as absorption surfaces for the internal heat loads, which are transported away again via night-time cooling. The cladding made of vertical aluminum slats also takes on the function of weather protection in front of the ventilation wings. The mood inside the building is reminiscent of the industrial past of the place. The entrance hall extends over the entire height of the building, is lit from above and is supported by powerful steel columns. It connects the entrance from the city with that from the park and spatially fulfills the task of a public building.
The triple gym is lined with walls made of industrial glass and thus indirectly illuminates the corridors in front of the classrooms. The organization, compressed to a maximum, the prefabrication and the optimization of the A/V ratio additionally characterize the building.
